IBM SEGRATE

A marketing center was built at the IBM headquarters in Segrate (Milan) by intervening on the original design by Marco Zanuso. Ground floor and basement were renovated for the new destination by adopting design criteria, materials and plant choices marked by maximum flexibility. On the ground floor, a "piazza" was created with gathering and relaxation areas. Meeting moments are focused around telematic islands in which, making use of digital technologies and multimedia, developments in network computing can be experienced. The furnishings have essential, sculpture-like forms, and the materials used (travertine, plaster, earth-based colors) recall small architectures rather than furniture. The display furniture is constructed of thin stone, with aluminum honeycomb support, thus generating "suspended" walls on wheels that provide an ambivalent image of lightness - heaviness, staticity - mobility. Even when mounted on wheels, they do not lose their character as walls erected in an open, borderless space in which it is pleasant to stay. On the same level of the plaza are located the classrooms for multimedia demonstrations and computer labs, while a 280-seat auditorium was set up on the lower level. This project was the beginning of a coordinated image for all IBM offices in Italy: subsequently, the new offices in Novedrate, Rome, Verona, Udine, and Pescara were built.
