BOCCONI UNIVERSITY – EXTERNAL STAIRCASE

Milan | 2016

Inside Bocconi University’s Campus in Milan, in the library building at Via Gobbi No. 5, designed by Giovanni Muzio in 1962, work was needed to adapt the book depository to the new fire regulations and the construction of a new external safety staircase. The staircase structure consists simply of a central concrete septum with the ramps and landings cantilevered over it. Entirely made of cast-in-place and hammered reinforced concrete. The staircase remains detached from the existing volumes and aligned in both width and height with the existing building. The type of concrete and surface finish recalls the finish of the existing facade tiles while the railings are painted iron. Lighting was recessed into the concrete so that the light fixtures could not be seen. Such accuracies were undertaken to respect and integrate the staircase with the existing architecture as much as possible.
