BOCCONI UNIVERSITY | ENTRANCE

Milan | 2014

Inside Bocconi University’s Campus in Milan, between the Church of San Ferdinando designed by Ferdinando Reggiori in 1962 and the library designed by Giovanni Muzio in the same year, an new independent volume has been built to serve as a link between the two buildings. A new covered entrance to make the basement of the church accessible. It was entirely renovated by making study rooms to accommodate 240 students. The new volume has a projecting cantilevered canopy that protects from rain and sun giving a recognizable signal of the function of this volume within its context. The canopy is a natural extension of the sloping slab of the interior part; there is no solution of continuity between exterior and interior. The double-sloped course of the roof originates a space with a striking contrast of different heights. A fixed glass window overlooks a small space where a sculpture is planned to be inserted. The interior atrium is naturally lit by two large windows and skylights. All the elements that make up the new volume: floors, walls, ceilings, are made entirely of cast-in-place reinforced concrete, white in color with Carrara marble aggregates and hammered in place. The glass windows are transparent while the doors, frames, gate and handles are bronze.
